Don’t Let the Odometer Fool You
By The Dixie Pickers
One of the first questions we hear from prospective buyers is:
“How many miles does it have?”
It’s a reasonable question.
But after more than 40 years in the custom hauler business, we’ve learned something that surprises many first-time buyers:
Mileage is only one piece of the story.
We’ve sold exceptional trucks with well over 200,000 miles, and we’ve passed on trucks with fewer than 50,000 miles because they simply weren’t the kind of trucks we wanted representing our dealership.
If you’re shopping for a used Freightliner custom hauler, here’s what 100,000 miles really means—and what it doesn’t.
First, Let’s Put 100,000 Miles into Perspective
When people hear “100,000 miles,” many immediately compare it to a pickup truck.
That’s the wrong comparison.
A Freightliner M2 wasn’t designed to be a half-ton pickup.
It was engineered as a commercial truck.
These chassis are built to spend their lives on the road carrying weight, accumulating miles, and doing it reliably for years.
For most well-maintained Freightliner custom haulers, 100,000 miles isn’t the end of the story; it’s often just the beginning of the truck’s prime years.
Highway Miles Are Different
Not all miles are created equal.
A truck that spent its life towing a fifth wheel across the interstate generally experiences far less wear than a pickup that spent years making short trips around town.
Why?
Because highway driving is easier on almost every major component.
- The engine reaches and maintains operating temperature.
- The transmission shifts less frequently.
- Brakes aren’t constantly applied.
- Suspension components experience fewer abrupt impacts.
- Even the driver benefits from a truck that’s simply operating the way it was designed.
We’ve seen custom haulers that traveled all over the country yet remained remarkably tight because they lived almost exclusively on the open road.
Maintenance Always Wins
If we had to choose between two identical trucks, here’s the one we’d buy.
Truck A
- 65,000 miles
- Incomplete service history
- Unknown maintenance
- Long periods of sitting
- Signs of neglect
Truck B
- 145,000 miles
- Complete maintenance records
- Regular inspections
- Clean ownership history
- Garage kept
We’ll take Truck B almost every time.
Why?
Because maintenance tells you far more about the future of a truck than the odometer ever will. A documented maintenance history is one of the strongest indicators that a truck has been cared for properly.
Sitting Can Be Harder Than Driving
This surprises many buyers.
A custom hauler that sits unused for months at a time can actually develop more problems than one that’s driven regularly.
We’ve seen issues like:
- Dry-rotted tires
- Weak batteries
- Dried-out seals and gaskets
- Sticking brake components
- Fuel system problems
- Surface corrosion
- Flat-spotted tires
These aren’t mileage issues. They’re age and inactivity issues.
A truck that gets exercised regularly is often healthier than one that’s spent years parked in a climate-controlled garage.
The Interior Tells a Story
One of the first things we look at isn’t the engine.
It’s the interior. You can learn a lot from the driver’s seat.
Does the leather show normal wear? Are the switches intact?
Do the cabinets close properly? Has the owner taken pride in keeping the truck clean?
A well-cared-for interior often reflects the way the entire truck has been treated.
Attention to detail usually isn’t limited to what you can see.
Service Records Matter
Preventive maintenance is one of the best investments any owner can make, and good records give the next owner confidence that the truck has been cared for.
While not every truck comes with a complete folder of receipts, documented maintenance is always a positive sign.
So…Would We Buy a Freightliner With 100,000 Miles?
Absolutely.
In fact, we’d much rather buy a clean, well-maintained Freightliner with 100,000 miles than a neglected truck with half that.
We’ve seen too many examples over the years to believe mileage alone determines value.
The best trucks are usually the ones that have been driven responsibly, serviced consistently, and cared for by owners who understood what they had.
Our Buying Philosophy
At The Dixie Pickers, we don’t buy trucks based on mileage alone.
Every truck is evaluated as a complete package.
We look at:
- Overall condition
- Maintenance history
- Previous ownership
- Mechanical operation
- Cosmetic condition
- Quality of the conversion
- Signs of abuse or neglect
Only after considering the whole picture do we decide whether a truck deserves a place in our inventory.
Because when someone buys a truck from us, they’re trusting our judgment—not just our ability to read an odometer.
The Bottom Line
If you’re shopping for a used Freightliner custom hauler, don’t let one number make your decision.
A well-maintained truck with 100,000 miles can provide years of dependable service and countless memorable trips.
Ask better questions.
- How was it maintained?
- Who owned it?
- How was it used?
- Has it been inspected?
Those answers will tell you far more than the odometer ever will.
At The Dixie Pickers, we’ve always believed that condition, maintenance, and integrity matter more than mileage. And after helping customers find the right custom hauler for more than 40 years, we’ve never had a reason to change that philosophy.
